How to Calculate Your TNEB Electricity Bill

  1. Find your units consumed - Check your TNEB meter reading card or the SMS sent by TANGEDCO. Subtract the previous reading from the current reading to get the bi-monthly units consumed.
  2. Enter the units above - Type the number of units in the input field and tapCalculate Bill. The result appears instantly.
  3. Read the slab breakdown - The calculator shows each unit range, the applicable rate, and the cost for that slab, so you understand exactly where each rupee comes from.
  4. Check your savings (≤ 500 units) - If your consumption is 500 units or below, the calculator also shows how much you save under the new 200 free units scheme compared to the old tariff.

200 Free Units Scheme - Who Qualifies?

  • The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister announced an expanded free electricity scheme replacing the earlier 100 free units benefit.
  • Applicable only to domestic consumers with bi-monthly consumption of 500 units or less.
  • The first 200 units are completely free every two months.
  • Units from 201 to 400 are charged at ₹4.70/unit; 401–500 at ₹6.30/unit.
  • Consumers using more than 500 units do not qualify — the existing tariff with 100 free units continues for them unchanged.
  • This scheme does not apply to commercial, industrial, or agricultural connections.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is TNEB / TANGEDCO?

TNEB (Tamil Nadu Electricity Board) was restructured into TANGEDCO (Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation) in 2010. TANGEDCO is responsible for generating and distributing electricity to homes and businesses across Tamil Nadu, regulated by TNERC (Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission).

Is this bill calculation 100% accurate?

This calculator uses the official slab rates from TNERC Tariff Order No. 6 of 2024 and gives a very close estimate. However, your final bill from TANGEDCO may include additional charges such as fixed charges, meter rent, or arrears, which are not covered here. Always treat this as an estimate.

How do I find my units consumed from the meter?

Your electricity meter shows an odometer-style reading. Subtract the previous reading (shown on your last bill or meter card) from the current reading on the meter display. The result is your units consumed for that billing cycle (bi-monthly for most domestic connections in Tamil Nadu).

What happens if I use exactly 500 units?

At exactly 500 units you still qualify for the new 200 free units scheme. Your bill would be: 200 units free + 200 units × ₹4.70 + 100 units × ₹6.30 = ₹940 + ₹630 = ₹1,570. Under the old tariff the same 500 units would cost ₹2,215 — a saving of ₹645.

Does the 200 units scheme apply to commercial connections?

No. The 200 free units scheme applies exclusively to domestic (LT Category I) consumers. Commercial, industrial, and agricultural connections follow separate tariff schedules and are not covered by this calculator.

When was the TNEB tariff last revised?

The current tariff structure was revised effective July 01, 2024 under TNERC Tariff Order No. 6 of 2024. The 200 free units scheme for consumers up to 500 units was subsequently announced by the Tamil Nadu Government and layered on top of this tariff order.
